Maserati Kubang SUV Concept
Written by Automotive Rhythms
The Kubang is a very interesting take on Maserati’s positioning within the mid-size luxury SUV category. Of course it’s needed, but certainly has to be the right design fit for the Italian sports car maker. Yes, a new vehicle in this segment will represent a natural direction for Maserati to enlarge its product range and strengthen its presence in the sport luxury market. Yet, consumers are going to be split on this one, as they were when Porsche launched its Cayenne SUV.
Shown at the Frankfurt International Auto Show, the forerunner of the future Maserati range creates continuity for the brand. The idea of a sport luxury SUV is naturally not totally new to Maserati. Many will remember the Kubang concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. At a time in which few other brands were going in the direction of a sport luxury SUV, Maserati was already thinking to build one. Today potential synergies with sister brand Jeep are the important catalyst for Maserati’s own interpretation of a sport luxury SUV.
Conceived by the Maserati Style Center which is headed by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, all major system components of the SUV will be 100% Maserati including style, engine, suspension, brakes, handling and performance. A new-generation of Maserati engines will be designed in Modena by Paolo Martinelli, Head of the Maserati Powertrain Department. An AT 8-speed automatic transmission and specific performance settings such as suspensions, brakes, steering will be exclusively developed in Modena by the Maserati Product Development Department. We wish you well Maserati.
