BMW ActiveE: Charging Towards the Future

BMW ActiveE

BMW, the brand known for engine building and handling prowess, launched its first all electric car with enthusiasm at the 2011 New York International Auto Show this past week. Based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe, the ActiveE will use a 32-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Its zero to sixty mph times are just under 9 seconds.

The ActiveE can travel about 25 miles after one hour of charging. A full ActiveE charge can be accomplished in four to five hours using a dock that is installed at the driver’s home. A 7 kW onboard charger features active thermal management, so that the battery pack can consistently provide the estimated 100-mile range regardless of weather.

BMW ActiveEBMW plans to ship 700 ActiveE vehicles to the U.S. for long-term consumer testing this fall. It will be priced at $499 per month with a $2,250 down payment for a 24-month lease in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, New York, Boston and the state of Connecticut. BMW calls the ActiveE a “no-compromise” vehicle. It’s a highly complex offering that writes yet another technology page for the storied brand.
