Putting the Competition on “Death Row”

Leon L. Brittain, 1.31.07

And that’s exactly what Death Row Choppers of Bowie, Maryland did during the 2007 Washington Auto Show. With seven custom choppers and two insane custom Harley-Davidson V-RODs on display with names such as “Serial Killer, Black Mamba, and Hoodlum,” it’s easy to see why there was standing room only along the Death Row Choppers alley in the Automotive Rhythms Urban Restyln’ Salon.

Death Row Choppers has established a strong reputation for not only building creative quality custom choppers, but also for building fast custom choppers. This is due largely in part to their many years of experience on the drag strip with both cars and bikes. So it’s not uncommon for any of their choppers to stomp out 150 horsepower. Another interesting fact is Death Row Choppers is one of only a few African-American owned and operated custom chopper builders in the country. And because they’ve spent time with the Discovery Channel’s Jesse James and Billy Lane, it’s easy to see why Death Row cranks out quality products. In this highly competitive market, it doesn’t matter what your complexion is, you either play for keeps or you get played.

It’s with this proven reputation and unique standing we decided to approach our man Sweets (owner of Death Row Choppers) to build a custom bike for D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty. Given the fact that Harley-Davidson is increasingly looking for creative opportunities to reach out to the urban market, we decided to go with none other than their latest creation, the V-ROD. With this winning combination, how could we go wrong!

For this project, Death Row Choppers took a stock Harley-Davidson V-ROD and did their thing! Custom features included an air ride suspension kit, a custom exhaust from CFR, drag bars, custom handle bars and wiring, a mad 280mm fat tire kit, rims by Performance Machine, and an amazing custom midnight black and granny apple green paint scheme, kissed with burnt orange candy flames and combined with a smooth blend of chrome and black polish. And this was just one out of the several bikes on display shutting down the competition. Other bikes featured keyless remote starting, stretched forks, flat-black paint jobs, ostrich skin seats, racing stripes, custom lighting, and so much more.

As with the rest of the Urban Restlyn’ Salon, Death Row Choppers alley exhibited mass-appeal for all on-lookers whether seasoned riders or the casual attendee. There’s no doubt that once again our Urban Restlyn’ Salon was a major hit with its fusion of fly rides, hot fashion, entertainment, and the nastiest choppers on the streets.
