2007 Flip My Whip contest: Can You Flip a 1998 F-150? Yes We Can!

Gary (G. Joe) Joseph, 02.01.07

Yeah, that’s a play on words of an old hip-hop classic by A Tribe Called Quest. Fast forward 17 years and you are at the 2007 Urban Restyln’ Salon (URS) by Automotive Rhythms during the Washington D.C. Auto Show. We call the event Flip My Whip. It’s an annual tier-one event for Automotive Rhythms (AR) and the lucky contestant who wins the $10,000 worth of customizations courtesy of AR and its partners.

Flip My Whip, now in its 3rd year, partnered with urban radio station WPGC 95.5, Revision Auto, Big Boys Toys, JL Audio, Rennen Auto, and Hankook Tires to turn a hooptie into a vehicle worthy of the URS. This year’s winner, Cheyne Griswold, felt he was worthy of winning Flip My Whip for good reasons. Said Cheyne: “Three months ago I was involved in not one, but two hit and run accidents within two days!” With that type of bad luck, Automotive Rhythms stepped in to turn luck around for Cheyne.

Cheyne dropped off a black 1998 Ford F-150 in need of a face lift that an insurance company couldn’t even provide. What Cheyne picked up was a Dupont Hot Hues Jazzy Blue Ford that made him look twice to ascertain that the vehicle was his.

Here is how it all went down:

Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, WPGC starting airing radio promotions for the 2007 Flip My Whip campaign for contestants to enter their vehicles along with a short story detailing their need for vehicle upgrade. After the many entries were evaluated, Cheyne’s F-150 was chosen by Automotive Rhythms as the winning vehicle. We sent his truck off to Revision Auto in Gaithersburg, Maryland where they proceeded to strip and prime the entire body to get it ready for the paint scheme. We intended to install a Sarona body kit but shipping mix ups and delays prevented the installation in time for the auto show. Revision Auto improvised with some fabrications to the existing body for a cool custom look.

Big Boys Toys of Oxon Hill, Maryland took it from there with owner Hamid and salesman A.J. spearheading the installation of the rest of the equipment. The Big Boys added a JL Audio sound system that included a pair of TR 570 CXI speakers, an A4 300 watt amplifier and a 10” subwoofer power box. Controlled by a JVC 410 head unit, Cheyne will be rocking out until his neighbors call the cops!

Filling out the rest of the vehicle are International Trim chrome mirror covers, door handles and gas cover, Westin Nerf step bars, a T-Rex grille that does wonders for the front profile, and a pair of ill IPCW headlights that has the F-150 scowling at you. They also installed some IPCW smoked taillights to finish off the body’s aggressive style. Last but not least, the F-150 was outfitted with a set of 22” Rennen H2s wrapped in Hankook rubber. We painted the inserts to match the Jazzy Blue body.

From there, the F-150 was profiled at the Washington Auto Show, where over a million guests were able to experience the Urban Restyln’ Salon at its best. WPGC came down to the show to unveil the truck and its winning owner to the masses. Popular WPGC radio personality Shack n'D Pack along with AR President Kimatni Rawlins broadcasted the ceremony live and made sure everyone had a great time. Prizes were given away and the Flip My Whip winner Cheyne Griswold was announced.

So once again Automotive Rhythms and the Washington D.C. Auto Show were ready, willing and able to turn someone’s nightmare into a dream, by taking their old automobile and flipping it with upgrades. This Thanksgiving, after you start digesting that turkey and stuffing start listening out for the Flip My Whip promotions.
