2008 GM Style: Detroit City Rocks Again! The Cars/The Music/The Fashion
If fashion and design had a sound, which artists from today’s musical genres would it best represent? Well, General Motors (GM) made an earnest attempt at capturing the intended feel - representative of that essence with GM Style; a bold statement geared towards the lifestyle influences of the automotive industry.
The evening recipe consisted of a cadre of GM’s most illustrious automotive artillery, such as the 2009 Corvette ZR1 and HUMMER Hx Concept, mixed with entertainment from Kid Rock, Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5. All of this was topped off with a fashion show featuring collections from today’s most notable designers such as Detroit born Kevan Hall, whose signature couture gowns have redefined glamour for Hollywood stars, such as Vanessa Williams, Sharon Stone and many others.
There were many memorable highlights to this year’s GM Style. Mary J. Blige strutted on stage with a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, while performing Just Fine. The R&B Queen maintained a stunning swagger all evening. Maroon 5 performed many of their hits as several GM rides, such as the Saturn Astra rolled down the stage accompanied by models sporting fashions from designer Mark Zunino. Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons blessed the stage with his latest fashion-line Argyle Culture, a signature design cue in Simmons’ personal wardrobe. GM Style host Kid Rock not only rocked the stage with his hard-hitting, Rock-n-Roll “bad boy” style but also represented with his clothing line Made In Detroit. When questioned during the press conference on his expression of GM Style, Kid answered, “Blue Collar Sheik!” A true automotive enthusiast, Kid stated that he owns nothing but American vehicles, like his 1962 Chevy Impala and Cadillac Escalade.
Actor and entertainer Nick Cannon was in the house showing his continued support of GM’s lifestyle based events. In addition to the star-powered crowd GM also invited some of sports’ greatest athletes including Jerome Bettis, Joe Montana and Jeff Gordon. The evening seemed as if it were a series of moments captured in time. Toward the close of the event, both, Kid Rock and Reverend Run took it back with a rendition of Run-DMC’s King of Rock. Although the good Reverend has aged a bit with chubbier cheeks and a slower gangsta’ walk, he still did his thing, stepping on stage with a brown mink and black top hat to rock the house. Everybody in the place was summoned to a head nod!
All in all, the General gets props for making the cold winter night hot and sexy!
