Acura’s HSC High-Performance Sports Concept: Liquid
Steel
There are certain moments in life that define your
stance on open opinions -- like getting behind the wheel of an exotic
supercar. It can change both the momentum of your previous thoughts
prior to jumping in, as well as your intended resolution to the situation.
Ultimately, the manifestations which arise during wheel time in one
are mind-boggling. It happened to me a few years back after smoothing
out pavement in an NSX, Acura’s mid-engine performance enhancer
that rides in the shadows of its long list of arch rivals from Italy
and Germany. At first, I was headed out for a quick blockbuster run.
By the end of the day, I was securing a date for the evening.
According to Acura public relations, the reasons for conceptualizing the 300-plus
horsepower HSC are similar to those of the original NSX that debuted
as a ‘91 model. Says Acura, “The current NSX is widely
considered to be an affordable exotic with performance on par with
many exotics and successfully competes in the JGTC Super Car Series
in Japan. The HSC concept was designed with similar performance targets
in mind.” And like the NSX, the HSC is built mostly of aluminum,
fits its compact V6 behind the cockpit (midship) for weight balance,
and radiates that look of excitement. The HSC rolls on lightweight
forged aluminum alloy wheels that measure 19” front and 20”
rear for that “studded look.” Huge six-piston brake calipers
from Brembo slow down the concept with ease. A SportShift transmission
is employed to transfer the gears. It can be engaged by an unusual
dial shifter on the center console or by paddle shifters on the wheel.
The sharp edged HSC paints an impressive visual picture for the prided
owner. Its tailored lines run into angles that create a fiery exterior
calling on rain clouds for cooling. In the rear, dual pipes are integrated
within the lower spoiler, and a stealth camera displays visuals onto
the LCD screen inside the cabin when the vehicle is in reverse.
The initial diagnostics on the HSC are worthy of supercar
status, but first it must beat out its own NSX teammate before it
can be deemed in a category of its own. As Eminem would put it, its
like sitting on a throne the HSC doesn’t even own.
