2007 Dodge Nitro: A Sign of the Times
Dodge is no doubt on the offensive, with nine new vehicles launched in just two years, and betting its new Nitro will burn up the mid-size sport utility segment and push the company even further down the field. Though it’s the first entry into this smaller segment, the Nitro follows its brothers, Viper, Magnum, Caliber and Ram, with a complimentary bold physique and similar attitude. Under 20K, its innovative and just might have something for everybody.
One thing that separates those that are trend setters and those that are playing catch up is originality. The bigwigs around the boardroom should be saying, “So what if no other car or SUV has it, let’s offer it,” rather than trying to aim for the specs of their competitor’s current model. Dodge seems to get this and their thoughtfulness and creativity is evidenced in the Nitro.
Setting the stage is a fully capable and comfortable SUV with seating for five and a 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6. The engine is powerful and nimble, but our tester’s four speed automatic is quickly becoming a rarity, as five, six, seven and even eight speed automatics are now in the marketplace. Though throaty in sound and a bit jerky with the four-speed, the engine was fun to work and was enjoyable to fling around town. It also returns 18mpg city and 24mpg highway. The interior is very functional, with everything in clear sight and acceptable reach. There are also numerous storage areas, map pockets and beverage holders throughout the interior.
The hints of innovation are apparent with a closer look at the Nitro. Quickly obvious (as I reached for the audio system) is the well-placed auxiliary jack for your iPod, and a shallow tray by the gearshift to house it. Above those is the labeling on the audio system which denotes its MP3 capability. These additions are standard and are worth pointing out because in a 20K vehicle with the demographic they attract, these features are a must. Also worth noting is Dodge’s new MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System. Backed by a 20 gigabyte hard drive, Nitro buyers can actually download their own music and pictures through the system’s USB port. Controls are handled by a 6.5 inch full-color touch screen. This system also includes navigation and DVD capability, and uses voice command to control all entertainment and communication functions. To rock your downloaded hits, a 368-watt, eight-speaker Infinity sound system with subwoofer is available as is Sirius Satellite Radio.
For the gaming crowd, an 8-inch LCD rear seat DVD entertainment system is available with auxiliary input jacks, remote control, and wireless headphones. There is even a 115-volt power outlet for your laptop, small appliance, or PS3 in the center console.
Another first is Nitro’s “Load N’ Go” system. The cargo floor in the rear actually slides out 18 inches over the rear bumper to facilitate easy loading of heavy items. The sliding panel holds up to 400 pounds and is complemented by fold flat rear seats and a fold flat front passenger seat. With all seating down, the Nitro is a spacious and easy to load cargo hauler.
Starting at $19,885 (including destination), the Nitro comes in SXT, SLT, and R/T trim levels. All trim levels can be had with two or four-wheel drive and with various packages and options. The SXT comes with 16 inch wheels with 17 inchers standard on the SLT. The R/T boasts standard chrome-clad 20s and also brings joy with a potent 4.0-liter 260-horsepower V6. From the base Nitro to the R/T, all are equipped with an electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation, all-speed traction control, brake assist, side curtain airbags and advanced anti-lock brakes.
Driving the Nitro proved to be a fun experience. The suspension in our SXT was compliant, but created a bit of a top-heavy feel around curves. No worry with the R/T though, which carries a performance suspension. On the inside, passenger space is abundant and comfortable with the interior ceiling height pleasing even God’s gifted.
With so much offered, there is little doubt that the Nitro is a capable and affordable representation of today’s SUV. With attractive features, the personalization afforded by MyGig, full iPod and gaming availability, along with a host of other functional additions, the Nitro is an exciting prospect in its segment. Playing to Dodge’s strengths, the Nitro’s styling is brand-aggressive and the low luxury but functional interior pulls it off enough to work one more time. The phrase “know your demographic” really is in full play here, as this is a vehicle for the times.
