2007 Nissan Sentra: Mobile Backpack

Virgil Moore, 10.10.06

Labeled as the “Mobile Backpack,” the all-new 2007 Nissan Sentra is a sure fire hit for today's younger generation car buyer that is looking to stay within budget, yet wants to be stylish and trendy. Targeted after what the folks at Nissan refer to as the “Echo Boom Generation,” including those born in the late 1970s, an approximate 71 million consumer market. The “Echo Boomer” in Nissan's eyes is an active, on-the-go, highly social, versatile person. Who in a sense lives in their vehicle!

Whether going out with friends, taking road trips, carrying your mountain-bike or buying furniture at IKEA, the 2007 Sentra serves many purposes. Focused on interior compartments/storage space, Nissan's “Clever Fusion” design combines vehicle roominess with functionality. The 2007 Sentra has a “human-centric” interior design with a more ergonomic control panel (I-Pod, PDA/cell phone compartment friendly), aided by a heightened shift lever similar to that found in Nissan's Quest. The vehicle has superior trunk functionality, offering a “Divide-N-Hide” system that is completely removable. It even has a neat grocery bag hooks so that you do not arrive home with a royal disaster after completing your trip to the grocer.

Its wheelbase has been increased by six inches providing more road control. As well, the 2007 Sentra offers a 1.5 cubic foot larger trunk, ideal for an active lifestyle person, hence the term “Mobile Backpack.” An all-new “MR” series engine optimizes levels of horsepower and torque. It comes with a 2.0-liter, 140-horsepower engine and standard manual transmission, as well as an optional CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).

The ride leaves a bit to be desired as I quickly learned during my drive through the mountainous terrain and narrow roads outside of San Francisco. Cornering ability is just not the Sentra's strong suit, though on straight roads, the ride was comfortable.

Inside, an INTUNE integrated overhead CD holder that holds up to 8 CDs, and cupholders adjust to hold up to 32 ounce cups and are configurable to hold other small items like PDAs and cell phones.

Bottom line: the 2007 Sentra is a sound pick for today's upwardly mobile person wanting to stay within budget without losing the amenities and performance desired in your day-to-day vehicle.
