2008 Chrysler Roundup: What’s to Come for the American Brand

Virgil Moore III, 09.07.07

Every year, the Chrysler Group invites a swarm of journalists to view their new model lineup. This one day media event provides journalists the opportunity to randomly sample the new products at Chrysler’s Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan. We spent the majority of the morning listening to Frank Klegon, executive vice-president of product development, talk about Chrysler’s new powertrain plans for future lineups.

Optimistic about America transitioning to diesel, Chrysler predicts that both diesel and hybrid powered vehicles together will consume 20-25 percent of the US auto market over the next three to five years. Klegon also spoke very enthusiastically about the introduction of two dual-mode hybrid SUVs, the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen. With the pair, Chrysler hopes to increase their presence in the large SUV segment. Both share a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with a Multi-Displacement System (MDS) that allows operation on four or eight cylinders. The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gets an upgrade for 2008, resulting in noticeable improvements, power and fuel economy. Chrysler expects a 40% increase in city mpg and a 25% improvement in highway driving.

There will also be a new array of six-cylinder gasoline engines, and they too will feature MDS, allowing the V6 to run on three cylinders when less power is needed. Chrysler also announced the development of a four-cylinder diesel engine for the U.S. market. And look for a BLUETEC clean-diesel 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Dodge has a new player ready for the commercial market with the 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500. With a Cummins turbo diesel engine pumping out 305 horses and 610 pound-feet of torque, this heavy duty work vehicle features the largest standard fuel tank (43.3 gallons), and largest front brake rotors in its class. The commercial workhorse is available in 4x2, 4x4, dual-rear wheel, Regular Cab and Quad Cab models.

The entry-level Dodge Caliber is now available with a power-packed, high performance SRT4 version for 2008. This mini speed-demon blazes with 280 horsepower and a new menacing look. Complete with a functional air scoop and a funky integrated rear spoiler placed above the rear window, the 2008 Caliber SRT4 has a performance-tuned suspension that sits low to the road, brandishing 19-inch aluminum wheels.

Jeep will release the all-new 2008 Liberty, with two “Trail Rated” 4WD systems: Command-Trac and Selec-Trac. Stability and comfort are two major upgrades for the ‘08 Liberty having a new independent front suspension, five-link rear suspension and rack and pinion steering. The 2008 Liberty has a much boxier look, reminiscent of old school Cherokee models. The most noticeable new feature for the Liberty is the “Sky Slider” canvas roof that opens over front and rear passengers.

Overall, I found my most thrilling ride for the day in the 2008 Chrysler 300C SRT8. The overall styling of the 300C has remained the same, though the SRT8 model has a very muscular look. If power is your passion, then the 300C SRT8 certainly needs to be on your shopping list. Powered by a 6.1-liter HEMI V8 producing 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the Chrysler 300C SRT8 provides an additional 85 horses than its 5.7-liter little brother. I was very impressed with its overall body rigidity. Pushing in and out of turns and smoothly sailing over rough roads, the 300C SRT8 provides an exciting and comfortable ride.

Look for some exciting new concepts from the Chrysler Group as well, like the Dodge Demon Roadster. With a large and aggressive crosshair grille, angled projector headlamps, low stance and muscular flares over 19-inch brushed aluminum wheels, the Dodge Demon Concept has much attitude. Though the Demon appears to belong in the exotic sports car segment, it’s pitched as an “attainable dream car.” Another concept standout was the Nassau, a crossbreed in appearance reminiscent of the Pacifica and the 300. The Nassau Concept is a knock out four-door, four-passenger luxury coupe. Built on a 120-inch wheelbase and with 21-inch wheels, it offers SUV-like interior volume with a lower, more aggressive stance.

One thing is for certain, there’s no lack of enthusiasm at Chrysler with 20 new products and 13 revamped vehicles expected between 2007 and 2009. They are shining bright with a strong line of leadership from new majority owner, Cerberus Capital Management. Commanding the Chrysler troops will be newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Robert Nardelli, known for his hard charging management style. Jim Press, former exec with Toyota and Deborah Meyer, formerly with Lexus, have also joined what is now a formidable executive team.
