Built on the successful GV70 platform, Genesis has expanded its EV lineup by introducing the 2023 Electrified GV70 luxury crossover, which continues to represent the automaker’s three pillars of success: audacious, progressive, and distinctly Korean. Genesis has been forward-thinking since its debut, employing humble and authentic tactics to reach newfangled electric vehicle owners with its third all-electric model.
Similar to the pronouncements of almost every industry carmaker, Genesis Motor America’s clean energy goal is to become an all-EV company by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2035. The e-mobility shift includes the electrified G80, GV60, and now the GV70, which I tested recently in Atlanta, GA. I relished both city and country roads during the drive evaluation since the EV is quick, stately, and quiet as a pin drop, thanks to double-panned acoustically laminated glass. The AWD powertrain features dual electric motors that produce up to 320 kW or 429 horsepower (160 kW up front and 160 kW in the rear.) In addition, the 77.4 kWh battery and 400V/800V multi-rapid charging system can host Level 2 and Level 3 DC Fast Charging. With Level 3 energy recuperation goes from 10% to 80% in roughly 18 minutes. But perhaps, the most exciting aspect of the 2023 Electrified GV70 is its standard Boost Mode which lets you drive in a high-performance manner as the power increases to 483-horsepower and 516 lb.-ft of torque. In this mode, the bolstered and ergo motion seats will flex tightly around the waste to keep the driver in place while the vehicle blazes a trail for 10 seconds.
“We are pleased to announce that our first U.S.-assembled model has begun to arrive at retailers in 15 states,” said Claudia Marquez, chief operating officer of Genesis Motor North America. “The launch of the Electrified GV70 is a significant moment for the brand as we continue to grow our EV lineup for American customers.”
Externally, the Electrified GV70 is shapely with distinctive lines enhanced by a reverse G-Matrix patterned Crest Grille, standard 20″ 5-star alloy rims wrapped in Michelin Primacy Tour A/S tires, a panoramic sunroof, an EV-exclusive rear bumper, aluminum skid plates, and white brake calipers. Before expanding the color pallet, Genesis will present the Electrified GV70 in Vik Black, Savile Silver, Makalu Gray, and Makalu Gray Matte. However, a few quirks include the lack of an “Electrified” badge to distinguish your EV from the gas model and a charging port located within the grille. Additionally, I would like to see the vehicle’s all-electric driving range of 236 miles increased to at least 300 miles with the next rendition and battery pack update.
Inside the EV’s inviting cabin guests will be appeased by jewelry-inspired controls, a 12.3” digital 3D cluster, a new premium Glacier White layout, exclusive aluminum trim, Lexicon Audio, 3-Zone Climate Control, wireless phone charger, Drive Mode Select, and ambient lighting. The nucleus of the Electrified GV70 is its 14.5″ HD screen and cloud-based navigation platform that augments voice controls, over-the-air updates, and routing. Of course, either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is at your disposal. For security, a fingerprint reader can ignite the EV and load driver profiles. My only gripe with the cabin is the lack of USB-c ports.
Safety comes in the form of a bevy of advanced technologies including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Driver Attention Warning.
EV owners will complete 80% of their charging at home using a 240V Level 2 unit. Therefore, a home installation setup is best once you purchase an Electrified GV70. And when leaving the house to run errands, Electrify America’s coast-to-coast network is at your disposal for both Level 2 and Level 3 DC Fast Charging. For example, I can tap into the Genesis Connected Services and Electrify America mobile apps to source charging locations in my area from retail centers to hotels. Lastly, owners of the Electrified GV70 will be pleased with three years of 30-minute complimentary Fast Charging sessions from Electrify America.
The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 Advanced AWD starts at $65,850, while the Prestige AWD model kicks off at $72,650. Each will be sold at dealerships in the following 15 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Since Genesis assembles the EV at its production facility in Montgomery, Alabama, the SUV qualifies for federal tax credits. Moreover, Genesis warranties the Electric Vehicle System and the powertrain for ten years each or 100,000 miles.
So, are you ready for an EV revolution? The choice is yours as the mobility sector continues its shift towards electrification and carbon neutrality.
