Audi has never been shy about raising the ante, but with the all-new Q9, Ingolstadt’s finest isn’t merely raising the bar; it’s relocating it entirely. Unveiled in preliminary detail a few days ago, the Q9 represents the brand’s inaugural foray into full-size flagship SUV territory, and if this interior preview is any indication, the world premiere on July 28 cannot arrive with sufficient enthusiasm.
CEO Gernot Döllner framed the Q9’s philosophy with characteristic precision:
“With the Q9, ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ is increasingly defined by the in-car experience. Cars have long been much more than just a means of transportation; they are mobile living spaces for our customers. Premium materials, variable seating with individual electric seats in the second row, and automatic doors underscore the commitment to quality in our new, large full-size SUV.”
That is not mere corporate rhetoric. The Q9 has been conceived as a mobile sanctuary, equally at home ferrying executives or transporting families to games and school activities.
The seating architecture articulates that ambition eloquently. Buyers may configure the Q9 as either a 7-passenger or an executive 6-seat arrangement, the latter featuring electrically adjustable captain’s chairs in the second row. Front occupants are treated to sports seats with available ventilation and massaging functions. Third-row access, historically an awkward contortion exercise in vehicles of this breed, has been resolved by an outer second-row seat that slides and tilts forward electrically without disturbing installed child safety seats.
Perhaps the most significant innovation, however, is the one you engage with before you even settle in. For the first time in Audi history, all doors operate electrically via an interior push-button. The optional Smart Entrance system extends that command authority to the myAudi app, MMI, and key fob. Obstacle-detection sensors add a layer of spatial intelligence, preventing doors from contacting walls, cyclists, or unsuspecting bystanders in urban environments. It is the kind of seamless Audi engineering that distinguishes genuinely premium vehicles from contenders.
Overhead, a panoramic sunroof commands the cabin’s atmosphere. The optional PDLC technology segments the glass into nine individually controllable zones, each capable of transitioning from transparent to opaque at the occupant’s discretion, eliminating the need for a conventional shade entirely. When parked, the roof defaults to an autonomous, opaque state. When re-engaged, it recalls your last preference.
The sensory experience extends below eye level as well. Bang & Olufsen’s new 4D premium sound system transcends auditory convention by incorporating seat-mounted actuators in the front row, allowing music to register as a tactile phenomenon. The dynamic interaction of ambient light synchronizes with the rhythm and artwork of whatever is playing, rendering the cabin a chromatic extension of the soundtrack. I can’t wait to sync Bob Marley’s Legend with the audio technology.
Smart material choices throughout the cabin reflect Audi’s style direction. Fine Nappa leather, Dinamica microfiber, ash natural wood inlays, and carbon fiber weave surfaces are anchored by new hues, including Tamarind Brown and Stone Beige. Glossy surfaces have been replaced with matte and textured finishes.
The Q9 is not merely an SUV; it is a distinguished example of where premium motoring is headed.
