Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 three-row electric SUV stood out in Savannah, Georgia when I drove it at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). It impressed with a comfortable cockpit, 800V fast-charging, and nimble handling for its size. Now, the 2027 IONIQ 9 AWD Performance Calligraphy Black Ink gives the flagship a darker, more dramatic style.
Built at HMGMA in Bryan County, GA, as part of a major local investment, the Calligraphy Black Ink is Hyundai’s most luxurious IONIQ 9. Having driven the standard model, I found its foundation solid, while this version sharpens the contrast.

The Name Has Meaning. The Look Has Intent.
First, let’s consider the philosophy behind this edition. “Calligraphy” points to Hyundai’s focused approach to design and attention to detail. The “Black Ink” component highlights clarity, strength, and confidence. Together, these elements show design intent rather than serve only as marketing.
Available in Abyss Black Pearl, the exterior features a suite of blacked-out treatments:
- gloss black roof rails
- black window moldings
- a blacked-out Hyundai emblem up front
- exclusive 21-inch Turbine Design alloy wheels.
In my initial IONIQ 9 drive, I observed the rear design’s transition from curves to a squared finish, and it took time to appreciate. The all-black treatment softens this shift, lending the rear a stealthier, cohesive presence.

Furnished Space, Now in All Black
When I piloted the 2026 IONIQ 9 through Savannah, the cockpit felt like a furnished lounge designed for calm. The Calligraphy Black Ink edition shares this ethos, but adds an exclusive black colorway, unique seat upholstery, aluminum trim with handcrafted patterns, and a matching black steering wheel.
The six-passenger layout retains the standard model’s flat floor, ample storage, and generous space. First- and second-row Relaxation Seats with power recline and ventilation return, while the third row adds heated seats for a family-first approach. An eco-suede headliner, curved dual 12.3-inch displays, 14-speaker Bose audio, USB-C ports throughout, a 10-inch Head-Up Display, digital rearview mirror, panoramic roof, and dash cams combine for one of the best-equipped EV cabins in the segment.

422 Horses. 24 Minutes. No Compromise.
In the standard IONIQ 9, acceleration was fluid and quick for its size. The Calligraphy Black Ink amplifies this with Hyundai’s most powerful IONIQ 9 setup: 422-horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque from a dual-motor AWD powertrain, energized by a 110.3-kWh battery and 800-volt architecture. It supports 350kW DC charging, reaching 10% to 80% charge in about 24 minutes. A native NACS port provides broad charging access, and Terrain Mode covers snow, sand, and mud settings.
The Verdict: The Art Form Evolves
Olabisi Boyle, Hyundai Motor North America’s SVP of Product Planning, calls the IONIQ 9 a no-compromises family SUV that happens to be electric. The Calligraphy Black Ink builds on the model’s strengths in range, space, tech, and craftsmanship. It does so while presenting a bold, premium look.
The world is advancing through innovation, and the IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink is Hyundai’s reminder that luxury, sustainability, and performance are not mutually exclusive pursuits. The 2027 model arrives at dealerships this summer.
