This past 4th of July weekend we road tripped to a family reunion in Erie, PA from Silver Spring, MD in our Korean AWD SUV. The 2016 Kia Sorento was an ideal vehicle for gripping the winding, elevated roads of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the sophisticated UVO infotainment system delivered the needed ease of navigation along with the comfort of ergonomic driver controls. As well, multiple USB charging options and the 115V power outlet gave our electronic devices more than enough charging options for the extended journey.
The sporty, Merlot Nappa Leather-infused interior was quiet and the ride was fluid, partially due to the Dynamax AWD system which lives up to its name as a “true” performer offering noble stabilization from Torque Vectoring Cornering Control (TVCC) while riding on 19” alloy spins tucked in Michelin rubber. The system monitors road inputs, anticipates your next move and makes adjustments on the fly without any notice from the driver or passengers. Three engine choices are available including a strong 3.3-liter V6, but we were fine with our 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder which is pretty fuel-efficient as well (especially when Drive Mode Select is set to the ECO position). Normal and Sport are the other two styles of riding depending on your mood swings at the time.
Moreover, the Infinity sound system with Clari-Fi by Harman provided a mini theater experience while listening to streaming audio from our connected iPad. With ample tech features, contented interior (including reclining rear-seating) and a commanding outward appearance, the 2016 Kia Sorrento received more than its share of looks, stares and compliments from more than 100 friends and relatives over the festive weekend. In fact, my cousin was upset that the 3rd generation Sorento was not on her radar during the timing of a recently purchased Chevy Traverse.
Our $45,095 Titanium Silver Sorento — which includes the $2,500 SXL Technology Package (Xenon HD Lights, Lane Departure, Forward Collision Warning, Surround View Monitor and Smart Cruise Control) — is proving its worth for not only local commuting, but shines as a road trip vehicle for vacationing families or getaways with the fellas. This is one mid-sized SUV that will command attention not only for its bold design, but also for its functionality.
