Luxury car connoisseurs might as well reserve their spot because the German automaker from Stuttgart has just unleashed what might be the toughest and excitable SUV on the market. It comes in the form of the 2013 G63 AMG with a 544 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque V8 bi-turbo engine, which also features Mercedes-Benz’s ECO stop/start system as standard.
Shown recently at the LA Auto Show, the G63 AMG continues a long line of AMG modified M-B vehicles that offer additional performance characteristics with bolder interior and exterior styling enhancements. Standard features include a much-improved COMAND multi-media system featuring mbrace2 and Internet access. The G-Class also retains the grab handle on the front-passenger side, three differential lock switches and the redesigned “joystick” shift lever in the lower section of the center console.
Since 1979 the G-Wagon was originally conceived for extreme off-pavement and cross-country environments, yet has evolved into a daily urban commuter with the expected luxury accouterments. “Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 33 years,” said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “In its latest evolutionary stage, it offers state-of-the-art, powerful engines, a further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features, as well, of course, as its now legendary off-road capabilities. At the same time the design remains true to its down-to-earth, unmistakable style.”
The AMG makeover for the G-Class adds a new AMG radiator grille with double louvers; new bumpers with large air intakes; Red brake calipers; and 20” rims. New standard safety technologies include DISTRONIC PLUS, Blind Spot Assist and PARKTRONIC with a reversing camera. ESP is revamped and now offers Trailer Stability Assist and a HOLD.
