Hyundai Steals NY Auto Show Spotlight with its Off-roading Boulder Concept

By Kevin Vaughn Jr.

It may be the month of April Fools, but this brand-new off-road concept SUV is no joke. Meet the Hyundai Boulder Concept, a study from the Korean manufacturer’s California-based North American design studio. Revealed by complete surprise at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, the rugged, boxy, and bold two-door SUV teases a freshly developed platform for a mid-size pickup truck slated for production by the end of the decade.

Shown to an eager media crowd at the Javits Center, the squared-off and chiseled utility is ready to escort you to mountain bases, off-road trails, and wilderness camps with ease. Hyundai adopted a sporty, adventurous design ethos for its new Boulder midsize SUV concept, which captivated onlookers during the reveal.

Hyundai has recently toyed with the idea of entering the all-terrain segment by offering the off-road-inspired XRT trim on its Santa Fe, Tucson, Palisade, and IONIQ SUVs, as well as the Santa Cruz pickup truck. But the Boulder Concept is much more than just an everyday family-hauler with chunkier tires and a skid plate. For the first time, Hyundai is utilizing a strong body-on-frame architecture, perfectly suited for treacherous rocky roads due to its strength and durability. The future models that will eventually house this platform will be constructed here in America and made from steel sourced internally from Hyundai.

“Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure,” said Jose Munoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “We intend to compete in the midsize pickup segment with everything we have.”

Speaking of steel, Hyundai says the Bounder Concept’s body evokes a design philosophy they call “Art of Steel,” which uses the material, along with state-of-the-art technology, as a medium to combine functionality and style. The Boulder Concept showcases this with a wide slotted grille and large fender flares that seamlessly integrate with the front and rear taillights. It rides on massive 37-inch mud-terrain tires, with an identical spare mounted on the rear, much like the Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos it may soon compete with.

Staying true to its adventurous spirit, the Boulder Concept touts a roof rack for extra storage, a double-hinged split tailgate for easy loading access, an LED lightbar for enhanced visibility, and front-mounted tow hooks in case you need to be fished out of a dire situation in the often unforgiving wild.

“We are confident that something like this ultra-capable Hyundai SUV concept could more than fulfill the needs of this exclusive group of adventure seekers,” said SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s Executive Vice President and Head of the Global Design Center.

The Boulder Concept’s interior looks just as extraordinary as the exterior, highlighting a futuristic heads-up display that substitutes the traditional OLED gauge cluster. The off-road design focus continues with tilt and navigation shown on four center screens, grab bars, and fold-out tray tables. Thankfully, physical buttons are also present for controlling various functions, which is a sign of good things to come in an era where almost every operation is controlled digitally through touch or sliding bars.

Hyundai hopes its unique spin on the body-on-frame go-anywhere truck will attract a new crowd of American buyers. The Boulder Concept marks a new beginning for the brand, as they are set to release 36 new models exclusively in the region before 2030.

“Developing a robust midsize pickup is a significant growth opportunity for Hyundai in the United States,” said Randy Parker, President and CEO of Hyundai North America. “The Boulder Concept SUV signals our approach to this segment and how we are thoughtfully developing our midsize pickup with the needs and expectations of U.S. customers at the core.”

Kudos to Hyundai for doing something they’ve never done before. The Boulder Concept looks ready to take on anything you throw at it, and we can’t wait to see how the production version will shake up the market for off-road trucks and SUVs.
