The Prospect of an EV Future: An Inside Look at Hyundai’s Metaplant America

By Kimatni D. Rawlins | Automotive Rhythms

If you’ve ever visited a world-class sports training facility, the kind where elite athletes are sculpted into champions using advanced performance science, then you already have an idea of what walking into Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) feels like. Except here, the athletes are electric vehicles, the coaches are AI-powered robotics, the assistants are Metapros, and the stadium is a mega-campus carved right out of Bryan County, GA, roughly 25 miles west of the Georgian Coastal town of Savannah.

More Than a Factory: It’s a Technological Movement

HMGMA is not your grandfather’s auto plant. This is the future of mobility born and bred in America. During a recent visit to the fascinating facility, I toured some of its 11 main buildings. As part of my experience, I also explored the largest sustainable nameplate in the Korean automaker’s e-mobility portfolio, dubbed IONIQ 9. Later that day, I drove freshly produced vehicles on the factory’s inspection test track, witnessed new trainees elevate to the next level, and took the IONIQ 5 AWD XRT on a short rally course for a dust-filled finish.

Turning to the vehicles themselves, Hyundai’s all-electric IONIQ brand continues to expand with products tailored towards growing, on-the-go families. The successful, game-changing IONIQ 5 compact crossover initially set the tone, while the IONIQ 6 sedan continued the momentum. Now, the latest three-row, 7-passenger e-SUV pushes this trajectory even further. During my media visit in Savannah, I re-evaluated the futuristic minivan/crossover and was highly impressed by its technology, capabilities, and amenities. With up to 335 miles of electric driving range, longer road trips or multi-day excursions around town no longer produce range anxiety.

HMGMA sits directly off Interstate 16 with fast access to I-95 and the Port of Savannah. Much like an athletic director manifesting the school’s winning formula across all team sports, this campus was engineered for speed-to-market and logistical dominance. Spanning 3,000 acres (larger than Disneyland), it encompasses 11 buildings and 7.5 million square feet. Sustainability is woven into the infrastructure: one of the main parking lots features over 1,800 solar panels generating up to 5% of the plant’s daily energy needs. The facility is clean, quiet, and bathed in natural light from expansive glass ceilings. Additionally, an ecological park for employee recreation is in the works—a particularly meaningful development for me since daily activity, nutritional eating, and natural habitats are my winning formula.

Meet the Metapros Who are Building the Future

As I was instructed, step one at HMGMA is to forget the word “employee.” Everyone here, from the CEO to the assembly line, carries a single unified title: Metapro. It’s not corporate branding for the sake of it. “Meta” means transformative, and that identity is baked into everything from the design of this facility to the efficiency of its operations. The message is concise and deliberate; you’re not just building cars here, you’re part of a transformative plant, a plant of the future. That unique philosophy shapes hiring, culture, and community impact equally.

HMGMA didn’t just come to Georgia to build EVs; it brought promises—promises of quality jobs, great opportunities, and competitive pay for people in this region. Unlike many corporate proclamations, Hyundai is providing tangible proof. For example, with gas prices skyrocketing due to the war, car buyers have renewed their interest in electric vehicles—a win-win for the automaker, which has committed $12.6 billion to build this facility. This represents the single-largest economic development investment in Georgia’s history and will create 8,500 onsite jobs and 7,000 offsite supplier jobs. That number keeps climbing. Notably, full production launched in October 2024, and the initial 300,000-vehicle goal was quickly raised to 500,000 EVs annually. Continuing this momentum, at the October 2025 Investor Day, Hyundai announced phase two: an additional $2.7 billion and 3,000 more direct and indirect jobs. This level of commitment shows a championship organization doubling down on its winning strategy.

And the pay? The average salary at HMGMA is around $58,000 per year, excluding benefits. That’s approximately 25% higher than the average wage in Bryan County, translating to a local annual payroll of half a billion dollars. For young adults in coastal Georgia who once had to look toward Atlanta for high-paying careers, HMGMA is changing that calculus entirely.

The Hyundai EV Roster: IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9

HMGMA currently produces two vehicles, both rolling proof of Hyundai’s EV ambition. The 2026 IONIQ 5 is the established point guard of the lineup, delivering up to 318 miles of range. Similar to Steph Curry’s electrifying energy, the athletic crossover can recharge 10–80% at a DC Fast Charging station in roughly 24 minutes via its 800V architecture. Power output ranges from 225-horsepower for a RWD to 320-horsepower for the AWD. The dynamically angled exterior with signature pixel LED lighting remains one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the EV game, while the XRT variant with rugged styling and raised ride height is ideal for those who want more aggression during muddy gameplay. I certainly required it with the XRT while tearing up the rutted course.

Then there’s the IONIQ 9, the versatile star forward Hyundai added to the lineup in March 2025. Having driven it during my Savannah media experience, I can confirm this three-row, seven-passenger SUV is built differently. Range extends up to 335 miles with the same ultra-fast 800V charging as its sibling, and power runs from RWD to a dual-motor AWD delivering up to 422-horsepower. The lounge-like cabin features a fully flat floor, a sliding Universal Island 2.0 console, available relaxation seats, Bose audio, and optional premium H-Tex materials. The rear styling, where fluid curves transition to a more angular finish, is still an acquired taste for me, but the overall package is impossible to dismiss.

Lessons from Singapore, Scaled for Georgia

The Metapro philosophy and software-defined factory model didn’t emerge from thin air. I first witnessed Hyundai’s human-centric manufacturing vision at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGICS) — a seven-story smart mobility lab where roughly 50% of tasks are handled by robots and AI alongside a skilled human workforce. There, I watched automated robots divert around workers mid-floor, observed Spot the robodog photograph assembly processes for real-time quality control, and participated in a 620-meter Skytrack for final vehicle checks. Similarly, every element of production at HMGMA, from order collection, procurement, logistics, and assembly, is optimized in real time through AI and data systems.

Beyond the Vehicle: The Hyundai Ecosystem

What makes HMGMA’s output even more compelling is what surrounds it. Hyundai isn’t just building impressive EVs; it’s also developing the infrastructure to support them. The IONNA charging network, for example, is a joint venture with other major automakers that has 107 live charging sites across North America, with 46 more under construction, and 500+ sites contracted. A partnership with Circle K promises to bring fast charging to one of the most ubiquitous convenience store footprints in the country. Pair that with Hyundai Home energy solutions, in-car payment integration, and the growing IONNA–NACS compatibility for broad network access, and the ownership experience starts to feel genuinely seamless.

America’s EV Moment

For drivers watching the EV wave build from the sidelines, HMGMA is the solution to many industry play calls. The IONIQ 5 is a certified hit; the IONIQ 9 is the next chapter; and Metapros building both have been recruited locally from their own backyards. Impressively, Hyundai Motor Group climbed from 5th to 3rd in U.S. EV sales rankings between 2021 and 2025, trailing only Tesla and GM. Electrified vehicles now account for 33.8% of all Hyundai sales as of Q1 2026, up from just 19.4% in 2023.

“With HMGMA, we are building the future of mobility together with America, in America,’ stated Euisun Chung, Executive Chair, Hyundai Motor Group.

At one of the most sophisticated manufacturing campuses on the planet, the future of electric mobility isn’t coming; it’s already rolling off the line.
