The Driving Force (TDF) recently concluded a highly successful 10-week internship program, selecting 15 outstanding students to participate in a comprehensive media and communications career experience. During the internship, students produced industry-focused content and developed workplace-ready skills. The initiative, developed in collaboration with Volkswagen Group of America, continues to provide meaningful industry exposure for students at Morgan State University, equipping them with key competencies needed for future careers.
Diversity with a Promise
Led by Volkswagen Group of America’s Corporate Engagement Sr Lead, Vicki Miles, and Regional Fleet Sales Manager, Kendra Patterson, the program engaged a talented cohort from Morgan State’s School of Global Journalism & Communication. During the internship, students connected with professionals, gaining firsthand insight into career pathways, workplace dynamics, and the future of mobility. As a result, students expanded their professional networks, enhanced practical skills, and gained greater clarity on potential career directions within the mobility sector.
“It has been a pleasure to provide students with exposure to the inner workings of the automotive industry, particularly at Volkswagen, while also creating opportunities for them to engage with professionals across various areas of our business,” stated Vicki.

“The Driving Force’s collaboration with Morgan State continues to create professional direction for our students,” said Kimatni D. Rawlins, publisher of Automotive Rhythms. “Through TDF’s internship, we are educationally developing HBCU scholars while supporting automakers’ efforts toward the rapidly changing demographic.”
A Purpose-Driven Partnership
Volkswagen Group of America remains committed to leveraging its innovation and resources to create opportunities that extend beyond the automotive sector. The expansion of The Driving Force internship program at Morgan State University reflects that mission.
Established in 2020, TDF was designed to introduce students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to a wide range of career opportunities within the automotive industry. The program combines structured training with mentorship, focusing on key disciplines such as marketing, multimedia, public relations, content creation, and publishing. The inaugural Morgan State cohort included 18 students, more than 70 percent of whom were female—highlighting the program’s emphasis on diversity and inclusion.

“Our interaction with Volkswagen and The Driving Force internship greatly exceeded our expectations,” said Jackie Jones, Dean and Professor of Journalism at Morgan State’s School of Global Journalism & Communication. “The students loved the program, as it showed in their final content creation projects. I couldn’t be more delighted with this partnership.”
Electric Innovation Meets Campus Life
As part of the program, students participated in an on-campus experience featuring the all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz, where they were able to explore and test drive the electric van. For many students, the biggest benefit is convenience. Charging at home or on campus can be simpler than finding time to stop for gas, especially during busy weeks filled with classes, work, and activities. The vehicle’s quiet ride and smooth handling also make it ideal for city driving, where many students spend most of their time. It offers enough space for a group of young adults while still allowing easy maneuvering and parking.

“It’s a three-row vehicle that fits families without using gas,” said Greg Morrison, one of the founders of The Driving Force. “For city driving, that’s a big advantage.”
Inspired by the original Volkswagen Bus, the ID. Buzz keeps its classic shape but updates it with a modern, electric design. Built on Volkswagen’s EV platform, it focuses on space, simplicity, and efficiency, making it a practical option for people constantly on the move. The ID. Buzz offers over 230 miles of range on a full charge, providing enough distance for daily commutes, weekend trips, or rides home without constant concern over recharging. Drivers can simply plug in overnight and start the next day, ready to go. The ID. Buzz is known for efficient packaging with modern functionality, spaciousness, recycled materials, cutting-edge EV technology, and advanced driver assistance systems.
Empowering the Next Generation
The continued collaboration between Volkswagen, Morgan State University, and The Driving Force underscores a shared commitment to empowering the next generation of professionals. By providing access, mentorship, and real-world experience, the program has led to more internships and successful transitions into professional roles for participating students, equipping them with the tools to succeed in a rapidly evolving landscape.
Our greatest joy is uplifting urban communities while creating programs to help collegiate adults achieve and excel. We look forward to witnessing their ascension from the classroom to the boardroom.
