Chronographs are among today’s most popular timepieces because of their  distinctive masculine look and for the precise timing of an event or activity by recording the passing of hours, minutes and seconds. This ranges from timing a lap around a track, plotting navigation or timing the perfect steak on the grill.

There’s a big variety of styles, shapes and sizes – from 40mm to really big 50mm — in chronographs. I prefer the more unique and interesting square or rectangular shapes over the traditional which will explain why I selected Tag Heuer’s Silverstone chronograph for this column. This limited edition beauty is a distinctive combination of “square” and “circle” which emulates the interesting Silverstone Circuit, a race course which I had the pleasure of enjoying ‘hot-laps’ on last year in a Mini Cooper at 125 mph! It is also the home of the British Grand Prix and the first ever Formula One Championship started at Silverstone.  The Silverstone design also comes from the famous square shape Tag Heuer Monaco, which is acknowledged to be the first self-winding chronograph and the first patented waterproof square chronograph. Until then, only circular designs could be waterproof.

The latest iteration of the Silverstone also celebrates TAG Heuer’s 150 year history by featuring the brand’s original Heuer logo, which is flanked on the dial by two silver counters at 3 and 9 o’clock. Stain-less steel pushbuttons at 2 and 4 o’clock, a hand-applied date window at 6 o’clock and curved, sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment complete the watch’s look.

Offered with a rich “vintage” blue or brown dial on a matching, perforated alligator strap, the 42 mm time-piece is available in a limited worldwide quantity of 1,860 pieces per color, in recognition of the year the brand was founded. The Silverstone will retail for about $6,500. For a store near you visit
