MINI USA and the MINI John Cooper Works Team (MINI JCW Team) have announced their participation in the upcoming 2021 SRO TC America series, beginning at Sonoma Raceway on March 5. In its continued partnership with Indianapolis-based LAP Motorsports, which owns and operates the MINI JCW Team, MINI USA will once again run two cars in the Touring Car A class (TCA) for the 2021 season. Mark Pombo will return in car #61 MINI JCW alongside Clayton Williams driving the #62 MINI JCW.
The MINI John Cooper Works Team has high expectations following a successful finish to the 2020 SRO TCA America season. Highlights included the team taking home five and six podiums at Sonoma and Virginia International Raceway, respectively, as well as winning the Manufacturers’ Championship title.
“MINI USA is excited to go racing in 2021 and continue the racing legacy started by John Cooper 60 years ago in 1961,” said Patrick McKenna, Department Head, Marketing, Product and Strategy at MINI USA. “Luis Perocarpi and LAP Motorsports are well-positioned to enter the third consecutive year with MINI participating in TC America and I’m confident that our highly skilled team will make this a milestone year for MINI!”
Since there will be no fans in attendance at the track, both races will be streamed live at YouTube.com/GTWorld. In addition, MINI John Cooper Works Team owner Luis Perocarpi and members of the team will be posting live debriefings and updates from each session across the team’s social media channels including Facebook and Instagram.
“It is incredible that we get to compete with MINI for a seventh straight year, especially the way the world is today,” said Luis Perocarpi, team owner, LAP Motorsports. “We are eager to get the 2021 season started and we are very excited with some of the surprises we have coming in the next few months so make sure you stay tuned. I can’t wait!”
Continuing a years-long tradition, technicians from MINI dealerships all over the country will support the MINI JCW Team throughout the season as part of the MINI Service Technicians Education Program (STEP).
The MINI JCW Team also won Manufacturers’ Championship in 2018 in the final season of the Street Tuner class of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series, where the team finished ahead of BMW, Porsche and Mazda.
