BMW Celebrates 50 Years of the Venerable 3 Series

Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins

It’s a celebratory year as BMW pays homage to 50 years of the well-respected 3 Series in the United States. Masters of reinvention, BMW continued to produce new hits with each subsequent generation dating back to 1975/76. At the 30th Amelia Concours d’Elegance, BMW highlighted the icon’s history in an epic display on the green of the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island for thousands of car enthusiasts to lay eyes on.

Marking 7 generations of the perennial favorite, the 3 Series first hit the scene as the E21, which was powered by an updated version of the BMW M10 4-cylinder engine. This model is the soul and essence that established BMW in North America. The curated exhibition showcased exceptional examples chronicling the evolution of the 3 Series over the past five decades leading up to the current 2025 M340i. The display featured meticulously preserved consumer cars, legendary M cars, and thrilling race cars that highlight the extraordinary versatility of the 3 Series.

A second gathering of 3 Series at Cars & Caffeine featured 50 pristine models from members of the BMW Car Club of America who visited Florida from as far as New Jersey. As you can see, the inherent BMW design techniques are infectious.

BMW’s historic showing featured a 1983 E21 320i, 1992 E30 M3 DTM Race Car, 1995 E36 M3 Lightweight, 2001 E46 M3 GTR ALMS Race Car, 2011 E92 M3 GT ALMS Race Car, 2019 F31 330i xDrive Sportwagon, and 2025 G80 M3 CS. Media were also able to take spins in a 2006 E46 M3, 2013 E92 M3 Lime Rock Park Edition, and 2025 G20 M340i xDrive. Over the span, consumers have had the choice of purchasing a 3 Series as a coupe, sedan, sport wagon, convertible, high-revving M sports car, or championship-winning race car.

My favorite 3 Series is the 2001 M3 GTR, aka E46, with a grander and stiffer body shell than the E36 it replaced. The model highlighted at The Amelia 2025 features a dominant 4-liter that led to impressive runs in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) 2001 season. Aerodynamics, a 50/50 weight distribution, and prodigious amounts of aluminum for suspension components were key factors in the E46’s motorsports success.

Enjoy the photo session!
